Bryker Woods was established in the 1930s to 1950s. It originally consisted of one-story wooden cottages, mostly three-bedroom or less. Today, those cottages still remain, mixed in with some newer homes. Despite the growth of the city around it, the neighborhood retains its original, quiet, suburban feel. Nevertheless, the commercial development along the borders generates some noise and traffic.

The neighborhood is next to Hwy. 1 (MoPac) to the west and to the Shoal Creek Greenbelt to the east. So residents have easy access to the rest of the city by car and to parks and outdoor recreation.
